94%Good morning, my dear judges, ladies and gentlemen. Please allow me to introduce my lesson plan for you. The topic isThe Washing Machine has changed the World. It is the reading part.
I divide my lesson into six parts.
And now, first let's come to the text analysis.
This text is an argumentation under the thematic context of “Man and Society”. It is a topic of technology development and social progress. It explains the reasons why washing machines are considered as the greatest invention. This text is designed to point out the significant role that washing machines have been playing in human’s history. It tells the way we think about technology or invention and their subtle yet crucial influence.
This text includes three argumentative strategies employed.
Part one, paragraph 1 to 2. It introduces the issue and quotes the argument. And part 2 includes paragraph 3 to 6. It illustrates the argument by comparing and giving an example. And the last part is paragraph 7. It reiterates the argument.
And my students analysis are based onthe KWL model.
Firstly, what students know. They previewed the difficult words and they have learned about the inventions. They knew history of women’s liberation in the history lesson. They also learned basic writing strategies employed in argumentative essays in the Chinese class. However, they rarely acquainted with argumentation written in English.
And what they want to know are: how washing machines “change” the world, and how to think more about the relationship between inventions and social progress from different perspectives and they also want to know how an English argumentation is organized.
Therefore, they need to learn how to get the learning objectives in this lesson.
So, my learning objectives are based on the English learning activity concept.
They are learning and understanding activities, apply and practice activities, and transfer and create activities. At the end of this lesson, students are able to know more about the influence that the washing machine had on promoting women’s social status, common strategies for writing applications. And they are able to identify argumentative strategies and apply them to different topics under the same theme. They also need to think broadly, deeply and differently about the relationship between technology and social progress.
Therefore, my teaching philosophy includes two parts.Learning English for Developing Core Competencies and Learning English through activities. And my lesson is Activity-based, Process-oriented and Student-centered.
Now let’s come to the most important part: teaching procedures. It includes 5 steps.
Step 1: Lead-in.
Here are three questions for students: What do they have in common? Which tools do you have in your family? Which one would you like to keep in your house and why? If there were no washing machines, who would do the laundry for your family? These questions are trying to introduce the phrase “do the laundry”, to relate their real life experience to the learning topic and foreshadow the coming exploration of women’s liberation.
And the next step, it will come to the pre-reading.
In this step, students need to view the pictures and predict the contents by the title. And here is another question. How does the washing machine change the world? Can you make a guess? This question tries to get students to understand the theme and know the argument by predicting and to think broadly using virtual representations.
Next steps students need to skim the text and match the pictures and sentences and classify the main ideas.
Students are trying to classify each of the paragraphs into different main ideas and get the main idea of each part and to identify the reasonable text structure using visual aids.
In the next step, students need to read, judge and find.
Here are two questions about the text feature. They need to identify the main ideas and the text type of this lesson.
And in the next step, students will do a detailed reading. To read, obtain and grasp.
So, here is another question about the topic. How does the washing machine change the world? This question tries to sort out and grasp the causal influence before and after the spread of machine machines and tries to identify detailed information.
And next step students need to think, infer and reason the influence based on the opinions and they are going to grasp the exact meaning of the key sentence and the thematic meaning of a passage. Here are two questions: What differences will it make if African women have washing machines in their family? What is the exact meaning of “has changed the world” in the last paragraph?
In the post reading step students are going to do a pair work to think, analyze and perceive these questions.
The questions are: What is the purpose of this essay? What methods does the author use to make you believe the idea? What is the type of this essay? Will it be better if the title changes into “the washing machine changed world? Why or why not? These four questions are going to analyze and get the writing purpose of an argumentation. And try to is extract common strategies to make convincing argument and to identify its genre by observing the linguistic features of the text; and to perceive different connotations brought by different linguistic forms and realize the greatness of those invention “we take for granted”.
And next activity is the speech.
The speech is going to transfer writing strategies and language patterns learned into new contexts and help students to think deeply, broadly and differently on how a specific invention influenced the way society develops.
Here are two homework options for the homework.
Option one: “Write a 60-word summary for this passage.”
And another option is “Search for more inventions online and write a 60-word argumentation under the title of “Whathas changed the world?”, using at least one of the three great strategies learned. The three strategies are quotation, comparison and exemplification.Students need to choose one of them to finish.
So, this is my blackboard design.
As for my teaching repression,I think my lesson, my activities are related to the theme and its interpretation, but too many for a 40-minute lesson. And the questions are beneficial to open(PPT上写成了opening) their mind but restricted to one single form.
So that's all of my lesson plan today. Thank you for your listening.
